Cereal Box Dimensions: Standard, Family and Mini Sizes

A standard cereal box is about 12 inches tall, 7.5 to 8 inches wide and 2 to 2.5 inches deep. Here are the dimensions of standard, family-size and single-serve boxes, plus how to work out volume, surface area and how much cereal a box holds.

Key takeaways

  • Standard: about 12 x 7.75 x 2.25 in.
  • Family size: about 14 x 10 x 3.5 in.
  • Single-serve: about 6 x 4 x 1.5 in.
  • Volume = length x width x height.
  • Box size does not equal fill weight: check the net weight on the pack.

How big is a standard cereal box?

A typical standard cereal box is about 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall, 7.5 to 8 inches (19 to 20.5 cm) wide and 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm) deep. It holds roughly 8 to 12 servings, but the exact size varies by brand and by how dense the cereal is.

How to measure a cereal box

Box sizes are written length x width x height. For a cereal box, the length is the width of the front panel, the width is the depth from front to back, and the height runs from bottom to top. For packaging, measure the inside of the box; for shipping and shelf space, measure the outside.

Cereal box volume

Multiply length by width by height. A standard box of 7.75 x 2.25 x 12 inches has a volume of about 209 cubic inches (roughly 3.4 litres). A family-size box of about 10 x 3.5 x 14 inches is around 490 cubic inches (about 8 litres), and a mini box of 4 x 1.5 x 6 inches is about 36 cubic inches.

Surface area of a cereal box

Surface area is 2 x (lw + lh + wh). For a 7.75 x 2.25 x 12 inch box, that is 2 x (17.4 + 93 + 27) = about 275 square inches. This is the total outside area you can print on, and it is a popular maths classroom exercise.

How many cups of cereal are in a box?

It depends on the cereal. Light, puffed cereals take up much more space per ounce than dense granola. A standard box typically contains about 10 to 18 ounces of cereal, which is often around 8 to 14 cups for flakes and puffs, and fewer for heavy granola. Check the serving size on the Nutrition Facts panel and multiply by the number of servings.

Why cereal boxes are sized the way they are

Cereal is packed in an inner bag, so the box is sized around the filled bag with a little headspace for settling. Manufacturers also design around shelf heights, shipping case sizes and the large front panel, which works like a billboard in the cereal aisle.

Cereal box dimensions in centimetres

In metric terms, a standard box is about 30.5 cm tall, 19 to 20.5 cm wide and 5 to 6.5 cm deep. A family-size box is roughly 34 to 38 cm tall, 23 to 28 cm wide and 7.5 to 10 cm deep, and a mini box is about 14 to 18 cm tall, 9 to 11 cm wide and 3 to 4.5 cm deep.

Using a cereal box for maths projects

Teachers often use cereal boxes to teach volume, surface area and nets. Measure the box, calculate volume (L x W x H) and surface area (2lw + 2lh + 2wh), then carefully open the glue seams and lay the box flat to see the net. Comparing the box’s volume with the net weight of cereal also makes a good discussion about packaging and settling.

Why cereal settles

Most cereal packs say contents may settle during shipping. Cereal is filled by weight, not volume, and light flakes settle as the box is moved, leaving space at the top. That headspace is normal and helps prevent crushing during filling and transport.
