Key takeaways
- Small boxes: roughly 4 oz to 1 lb empty.
- Medium shipping boxes: about 1 to 3 lb.
- Large and double-wall boxes: 3 to 5 lb or more.
- Weight = board area x board weight per square foot (or GSM).
- Carriers bill on actual or dimensional weight, whichever is higher.
How much does an empty cardboard box weigh?
An empty cardboard box can weigh anything from about 3 ounces for a small gift box to more than 5 pounds for a large double-wall shipping carton. Three things decide the weight: the size of the box (how much board it uses), the type of board (paperboard or corrugated) and the wall construction (single, double or triple wall).
Cardboard box weight chart
These are typical empty weights for common box types. Exact figures depend on the board grade your supplier uses.
| Box type | Typical size (in) | Approx. empty weight |
|---|---|---|
| Small gift box | 8 x 8 x 4 | 3 to 8 oz |
| Phone or accessory box | 6.5 x 3.5 x 1.5 | 8 oz to 1 lb |
| Mailer box | 12 x 9 x 4 | 8 oz to 1 lb |
| Small moving box | 16 x 12 x 12 | 1 to 1.5 lb |
| File storage box | 15 x 12 x 10 | 1.5 to 3 lb |
| Medium moving box | 18 x 18 x 16 | 1.5 to 2.5 lb |
| Large moving box | 24 x 18 x 18 | 2 to 3.5 lb |
| Double-wall shipping box | 24 x 24 x 24 | 3 to 5+ lb |
How flute type and wall type change the weight
Corrugated board has a wavy middle layer called the flute. Larger flutes are thicker and heavier but cushion better. A flute is about 5 mm thick, C flute about 4 mm, B flute about 3 mm, E flute about 1.5 mm and F flute about 1 mm. Double-wall board such as BC flute is around 6 mm thick and roughly twice as heavy as single-wall board of the same size, while triple-wall board is heavier again.
Folding cartons made from paperboard are much lighter, usually 10 to 28 points thick, which is why cosmetic and food cartons weigh only a few ounces.
How to calculate the weight of a box
You can estimate box weight before ordering:
1. Work out the board area: add up every panel and flap of the flat box (the dieline). A regular slotted carton uses roughly 2 x (L + W) x (H + W), plus a small glue flap.
2. Find the board weight: your supplier can give it in grams per square metre (GSM) or pounds per thousand square feet. Typical packaging board is around 350 to 400 GSM, or about 0.07 to 0.08 lb per square foot.
3. Multiply area by board weight. For example, a box that uses 10 square feet of board at 0.075 lb per square foot weighs about 0.75 lb.
Why box weight matters for shipping
Couriers charge by the actual weight of the parcel or its dimensional weight, whichever is higher. Dimensional weight is based on the box’s length, width and height, so an oversized box can cost more to ship even if it is light. Some carriers also round up to the next whole pound, so shaving a few ounces off the box can move a parcel into a cheaper band.
How to reduce box weight without losing strength
Right-size the box so there is less empty space and less board. Choose the lightest flute that protects the product, such as E flute for small mailers instead of B flute. Use inserts to stop movement rather than upgrading to double-wall. And check the edge crush test (ECT) rating with your supplier to make sure the box still meets your stacking needs.

Example: weighing a standard moving box
Take a medium moving box of 18 x 18 x 16 inches made from single-wall 32 ECT board. Laid flat, it uses roughly 16 to 18 square feet of board. Standard single-wall corrugated weighs around 0.08 to 0.12 pounds per square foot depending on the grade, so the empty box comes out at about 1.5 to 2 pounds. A double-wall version of the same box can easily weigh 3 pounds or more, which is why it is worth checking whether you really need double-wall strength.
Box weight in kilograms
If you work in metric, the same principle applies: multiply the board area in square metres by the board’s weight in grams per square metre. Corrugated board typically ranges from about 400 to 800 GSM for single-wall and higher for double-wall. A small mailer using 0.3 square metres of 500 GSM board weighs about 150 grams; a large shipping box using 2 square metres of 700 GSM board weighs about 1.4 kilograms.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a medium moving box weigh?
About 1.5 to 2.5 lb empty.
How much does a small cardboard box weigh?
Usually 4 oz to 1 lb.
Is there a box weight calculator?
Multiply the flat board area by the board weight per square foot (or GSM) to estimate it.
Does a double-wall box weigh twice as much?
Roughly, yes, compared with a single-wall box of the same size.
How much does a 44 x 33 x 23 cm corrugated box weigh?
A single-wall box of that size typically weighs around 0.4 to 0.6 kg (about 1 lb), depending on the board grade.
How much does a box weigh in kg?
Small boxes weigh about 0.1 to 0.5 kg; medium moving boxes 0.7 to 1.1 kg; large double-wall boxes 1.5 kg or more.
